What Does a CFO Actually Cost? Pricing Guide 2026

What does a CFO cost? We compare employed, interim, and outsourced CFOs with real numbers and sources. Read the full guide here.

Hiring a full-time CFO costs most small and mid-sized companies between SEK 1,400,000 and SEK 2,500,000 per year, including salary, employer contributions, and systems. An outsourced CFO service typically costs considerably less, because you only pay for the time and expertise you actually need. That usually starts at around SEK 10,000/month for limited advisory work, and goes up to SEK 100,000/month for an ongoing, more comprehensive function, depending on the size and complexity of your business.

But that number doesn't tell the whole story. What you actually get for your money, and which option is right for your business, comes down to a few things we walk through below.

What does a CFO actually do?

A CFO owns the company's financial strategy, not just the numbers. That means building cash flow forecasts, advising on major decisions, sitting at the leadership table, and making sure the business doesn't overcommit. It's different from a financial accountant, who handles the day-to-day bookkeeping, and an auditor, who verifies that everything has been done correctly after the fact. A CFO looks forward. A bookkeeper and auditor look back.

What does an employed CFO cost?

According to Statistics Sweden's salary structure data, the median salary for CFOs in Sweden was SEK 77,800 per month in 2025 (source: Asta Agency). In mid-sized companies, both EK Search and Nordic Executive List point to a higher range of SEK 85,000 to SEK 140,000 per month, depending on company size and location, with higher levels in Stockholm than in Gothenburg and Malmö.

On top of the salary come employer contributions, pension, systems, and other ancillary costs. A common rule of thumb in Swedish recruitment is that the total employment cost lands at roughly 1.5 times the base salary. Applying that to the salary ranges above, the total annual cost for a small or mid-sized company typically falls between SEK 1,400,000 and SEK 2,500,000, depending on experience level and company size. This is an estimate based on the sourced salary figures above, not a figure drawn directly from those sources.

Beyond the salary, you also face:

  • Recruitment costs, often equivalent to a few months' salary

  • Onboarding and ramp-up time before the person is fully productive

  • Exposure if they leave, all the knowledge sits with one individual

  • The system costs the person needs to do the job

What does an outsourced CFO service cost?

An outsourced CFO service is usually priced one of two ways.

Hourly rate during the initial phase. Many engagements start on an hourly basis for the first few months. That gives both parties a chance to understand the scope before locking in a fixed price: how many invoices are processed each month, which systems are in use, how much reporting is required. Market rates for senior CFO expertise sit at around SEK 1,000 to SEK 1,900 per hour (equivalent to SEK 8,000 to SEK 15,000 per day).

Fixed monthly price after the initial period. Once the scope is clear, most clients move to a fixed monthly price. That gives you predictability, and you know exactly what you're paying for.

The cost of an outsourced solution is driven mainly by:

  • The number of entities in the group and how intercompany billing is structured

  • The volume of customer and supplier invoices each month

  • Which systems you already use (Fortnox, Visma, other business systems)

  • How much bespoke reporting and forecasting work you want

  • Whether you want a physical presence at your office on certain days each month

How we price at MinCFO

We always start by understanding where you are today: the scope, existing processes and volumes, and the systems you already use. From there, we give you a clear picture of what's included, and land on a fixed price you feel comfortable with. You never pay for more than you actually need, and you always know what's on the next invoice.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to outsource your CFO function than to hire? Usually yes, especially for companies that don't have the workload to justify a full-time role. You pay for the expertise and time you need, without the costs of recruitment, sick leave, or an empty chair when someone moves on.

How quickly can I get a fixed price? We start by understanding your current scope, processes, and volumes. From there, we can give you a clear fixed price.

Can I keep my current system, such as Fortnox or Visma? Yes. We connect to the most common Swedish business systems and work alongside the tools you already use.

What happens if our needs change? Pricing doesn't track volume directly. Thanks to automation and AI, you can grow without costs rising at the same pace. If your needs change, we adjust the scope together.
